NEW ORLEANS — In your Breakdown: a temperature check on crime in New Orleans. When we have multiple shootings like we’ve had over the last few days, the tragedy of them can make it feel like crime is creeping up.

But the numbers show violent crime in New Orleans is lower than it has been in years.

The city council's crime dashboard displays the rate of all crime incidents over the last decade. You can see a steep decline beginning in late 2023.

Compared to this time last year, the current total number of crime incidents is down nearly 20 percent and 42 percent since the beginning of the decline in 2023.

When we filter the dashboard just to show data for aggravated assault, homicides, shootings, carjackings, and armed robbery, you’ll still see the dramatic drop.
