TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - Sunday night, Tybee Fire Rescue launched a water rescue mission to recover five kayakers, including one child, trapped in a strong current off Little Tybee.
This all happened at around 7:22 p.m. Sunday evening, after the kayakers urgently called for aid.
“With one paddler losing their paddle and the group unable to return to shore, the situation quickly became life-threatening,” wrote Tybee Island Fire Rescue in a social media post.
At the time, rescue officials said there were heavy winds, four-foot swells, and a rising high tide. Tybee Fire Rescue swimmers launched a SAR jet ski and went to work bringing the kayakers to dry land.
Crews successfully rescued all five kayakers and brought them safety to shore.
