HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - On this date in 1938, the Great White Oak of Mingo County came down.

It was known as the largest White Oak in America at the time.

However, it was dying and had to come down.

It stood one mile from the Mingo County, Logan County line near Holden.

It was on property owned by Island Creek Coal Company.

Apparently, they made quite the show of cutting it down.

The story from the newspaper says it was turned into all kinds of picnic benches and tables and used as a park area afterward.
