PIERRE, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Lawmakers are in Pierre today for a special session to decide whether South Dakota moves ahead with a new prison.
This will be the fifth vote since a 2021 study suggested that the state needs a new facility.
In 2023, lawmakers approved land purchases, and last year, they funded site prep.
However, earlier this year, lawmakers rejected a proposal in rural Lincoln County.
Now, after a summer task force reset, legislators will vote on a $650 million prison plan, which includes a facility in northeast Sioux Falls.
