After The Black Phone delivered such a clever adaptation of Joe Hill’s short story of the same name back in 2022, it was hard to imagine what the creative team of Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill could do to expand on the story in a meaningful way for Black Phone 2. After all, The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) was successfully bested by young Finney (Mason Thames) and his little sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw). What more could there possibly be to tell?
Of course, as Black Phone 2 ’s trailer posits: dead is just a word. But I like the full quote from the film much better: “Dead is just a word. Fear is just the beginning.”
Sometimes, quotes get pulled for trailers because they’re catchy. That’s certainly true here, but those two brief sentences perfectly sum up the impetus for Derrick
