Sarnia’s Evan Abma has been tracking Lambton County’s historic farmhouses with the aim of preventing more from being lost.

Abma, chairperson of the Sarnia heritage committee, is scheduled to speak at an event at the Lochiel Kiwanis community centre in Sarnia, on Oct. 23, at 7 p.m., being held with the Lambton County Historical Society. Abma’s presentation will be about his project to document historic farmhouses vulnerable to being demolished.

“We’re losing like 20 per cent every 15 years,” Abma said.

He has documented about 1,700 historic farmhouses still standing, down from about 2,000 in 2009.

“It isn’t anything new,” Abma said about the decline. “We’ve been losing, I think, around that much for a long time.”
