A woman died after a fire at a supportive housing complex in Maple Ridge early Sunday morning, Sept. 21.

Maple Ridge Fire Rescue was called to the blaze at the Garibaldi Ridge facility at 11749 Burnett Street, and found the fire in one unit.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm that one person [is] deceased as a result," said Maple Ridge fire chief Dave Samson. "Our thoughts are with their loved ones, fellow residents, and staff during this difficult time."

The fire was contained to one unit, but smoke and water damage impacted a few other units, he added.

Garibaldi Ridge is a three-storey building, and was evacuated for the fire, but some residents were able to return to their units.
