IOWA (KCAU) — A baby boy has been surrendered to the state through the Iowa Safe Haven Act.

According to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, a baby boy who was born on September 8 has been surrendered to the state and will be placed into foster care until the baby can be placed with a permanent family.

Iowa HHS says that since the law was put into place, there have been 78 infants taken in through the act in the past two decades. This is the fourth baby placed into Safe Haven care in 2025.

To surrender a baby under Iowa’s Safe Haven Act, he or she must be 90 days old or younger and be taken to a designated location such as hospitals, police or fire stations.
