ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. — The Erie County Parks Department is taking new steps to remind hikers to stay safe on the Eternal Flame Trail.
Along with newly posted safety signs along the trail, officials posted on social media a list of tips for anyone looking to venture out.
These Reminders Include:
The Eternal Flame trail went under extensive renovations just a few years ago. In 2023, the Erie County Parks Department installed 139 brand new box steps, 120 feet of railing, and a realigned section bypassing the most dangerous part of the former trail.
In spite of these upgrades, the Eternal Flame is still a treacherous hike. Just this past March , the county had to temporarily close the trail after a 62-year-old broke her pelvis and femur. And in June , a 10-year-old had to be rushed
