Richland, N.Y. - A car driven by a Clay man reported missing weeks ago crashed so far off Interstate 81 in Oswego County that most drivers couldn’t see the car, troopers said.

On Monday, a tractor-trailer driver noticed the vehicle off the southbound lanes in the town of Richland and alerted authorities, said Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a spokesperson for the State Police.

Alexander J. Thornton , 33, was found dead Monday in the car that crashed 30 to 40 feet past the tree line, Jiron said. It was almost impossible for drivers to see from the road, she said.

The elevated seat in the tractor trailer likely made the difference in the car being spotted, she said.

Thornton had been reported as a missing vulnerable adult on Sept. 7. He was last seen on Sept. 5.
