ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) - Rocky Mount announced today that it is struggling with a financial crisis due to overspending over the past two years. The city faces higher utility rates, reduced spending, and layoffs, according a news release.

The new city manager, Elton Daniels, said Rocky Mount has depleted its funds over two years, spending millions more than its budget each month.

“These findings are troubling, and the city is hiring an independent forensic accounting firm to investigate further,” Daniels said. “We will share those results publicly when we can.”

In 2023, city council members Andre Knight and Reuben Blackwell voiced concerns about city management, while others remained skeptical until proven data was shown, the city says.
