That big, white water tower in Welland’s southeast is to be put out of commission.
City-owned land behind Welland Fire and Emergency Services Station 1 on East Main Street has been identified as the preferred location for a new 12-megalitre water tower, which would stand about 52 metres tall with a 38-metre-wide storage bulb.
It will replace Niagara Region’s multi-leg elevated tower at Bemus Park , on Coventry Road, built in 1965 with a storage capacity of 5.7 million litres.
A post on the Region’s website said the replacement is part of an ongoing effort to decommission all multi-leg elevated tanks, as they no longer meet building and seismic codes.
