One person is dead and traffic is backed up on both sides of Garden City Skyway in St. Catharines after a loose wheel crashed into two vehicles on the QEW span Tuesday afternoon.

The highway was closed in the Fort Erie-bound lanes at Niagara Street in St. Catharines and in the Toronto-bound lanes at Glendale Avenue in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Ontario Provincial Police have asked motorists to avoid the area.

On X (formerly Twitter), the OPP’s highway safety division said a wheel fell off a Fort Erie-bound vehicle, travelled into the Toronto-bound lanes and struck two vehicles.

OPP said the driver of one of the vehicles died at the scene, while a passenger was taken to a local hospital.
