JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) - A cyclist died after being hit by an SUV in southern Illinois on Monday night, September 22.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened at the intersection of Old Highway 51 and Cedar Creek Road in Makanda around 8:30 p.m.

They say a 49-year-old driver from Makanda and their two juvenile passengers were going southbound on Old Highway 51 near Cedar Creek Road in a 2015 Toyota crossover when it collided with a bicycle on the road.

The cyclist died at the scene from their injuries.

According to the sheriff’s office, the cyclist’s identity is pending confirmation at this time.

Deputies say traffic on Old Highway 51 was closed and redirected for about 2 hours until the road could be cleared.
