CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) – An Elmira man has been indicted on a criminal mischief charge in connection with a fire that occurred at St. Joseph's Apartments in April.

Martin R. Beebe, 76, was indicted on the charge of criminal mischief in the second degree (class D felony), as stated in an indictment from the Chemung County District Attorney's Office.

The indictment states that Beebe was charged with the crime after he intentionally damaged property at St. Joseph's, leaving damage that totaled over $1,500.

Previous reports state that the apartment building was damaged on April 30 due to a suspicious fire that occurred in an occupied apartment on the fifth floor of the building. Beebe was arrested later that same day following an investigation into the nature of the fire.
