LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - Firefighters in LaPorte are on their third day working to put out a big compost fire.
According to our reporting partners at the South Bend Tribune , firefighters were called around 1 p.m. on Sunday to the 1,000-foot-plus-long pile of mostly decomposing leaves, grass clippings, trees and branches on Zigler Road near the LaPorte County Fairgrounds.
Even though just a fraction of the pile caught fire, it’s been hard to put out. Fire officials say that’s because water soaking into the ground might not be reaching hot spots that are deeper in the soil.
It’s unclear at this time what sparked the fire.
