Fox has announced a straight-to-series order for a reboot of the classic lifeguard series "Baywatch." The new version is set to premiere during the 2026-27 television season and will feature 12 episodes.

The revival aims to honor the legacy of the original show while updating it for contemporary audiences. The new cast will wear the signature red swimsuits that fans remember. According to a press release, viewers can expect "adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry, and beachside heroics" that characterized the original series. However, the reboot will introduce modern challenges and a renewed mission to safeguard Southern California's coastline.

Matt Nix will take on the role of showrunner for the reboot. The original creators, Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, and Doug Schwartz, will serve as executive producers alongside Dante Di Loreto.

Michael Thorn, president of FOX Television Network, expressed excitement about the project. He stated, "In its first run, 'Baywatch' defined an entire era of beach life and elevated lifeguards to an iconic status. Now, with our partners at Fremantle, this television juggernaut is set for a modern-day comeback." Thorn emphasized that the collaboration aims to bring the California dream to a new generation of fans with fresh stories and rising stars.

Christian Vesper, CEO of global drama at Fremantle, noted the show's lasting impact. He remarked that "Baywatch" remains one of the most iconic series in television history. Vesper added, "Our goal is to reconnect with existing fans while also introducing a new generation to the world of these famous lifeguards."

The original "Baywatch" aired for 11 seasons and concluded 25 years ago. The series followed a team of lifeguards in Los Angeles as they protected beachgoers while navigating their personal lives. Notable stars included David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Brooke Burns, and Nicole Eggert.
