(NewsNation) — Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested United Nations workers might’ve intentionally stalled an escalator as retribution for President Trump’s criticism of the U.N. and his withholding of funds from the organization.

On Tuesday, just as the first lady Melania and President Trump walked onto an escalator at the United Nations Headquarters, it stalled. Trump mentioned it several times during his speech and afterward with the secretary general.

"If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately," Leavitt posted on X.

The Times of London reported Sunday that several U.N. workers joked they might stall the escalator when President Trump walked on.
