AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Local and state officials toured the Richmond County Correctional Institution (RCCI) to see its condition for themselves.
“Like the warden said, he can't sleep well at night worried about the electrical panels which we saw that are totally outdated and the boiler room it's a mess,” said Catherine Smith Rice.
Augusta has $11 million dollars in sales tax money for RCCI, but a new facility would be double that.
This city is reaching out to the state for another $11 million dollars, but it's easier said than done.
“I don't think the $11 million dollars is an option for this one facility,” said State Representative Karlton Howard.
So, the future of RCCI lies with commissioners. One benefit is the use of the inmate crews to help clean up the city.
