The energy industry regulator Ofgem has confirmed that suppliers must offer at least one tariff with lower standing charges by as soon as January next year.

Ofgem said it wants to give consumers more choice on how they pay standing charges on their energy bills , which disproportionately impact lower-income households, with the plans set to allow users to pay the costs as part of their unit rate by lowering the daily fixed amount.
