A new Indigenous mural has been unveiled on the front of Lacombe City Hall.

More than 50 people, including city councillors, Lacombe Museum staff and community members, gathered for the reveal of Eyes of the Wisdom by Stoney Nakoda artist and muralist Gordon Wesley.

The unveiling began with a smudging ceremony led by Gordon’s elder brother, Barry Wesley. He was joined by his son, Daystar, and his father, Elder Don Wesley, who offered a prayer to bless the mural.

Wesley said the artwork depicts the landscape before settlers arrived, showing the traditional trading and travelling routes of Indigenous people.

“The tribe used to move around, they didn’t stay in one place,” he said. “We put up the tipi camp here for a while and then put it down, move elsewhere. That’s how it was a long time
