The Toronto Blue Jays have activated outfielder Anthony Santander from the injured list, hoping to see him return to form as the team approaches the postseason. Santander had been sidelined for 101 games due to shoulder inflammation but is now set to play in a crucial game against the Boston Red Sox.
In a surprising announcement made shortly before Tuesday's game, the Blue Jays also revealed that they have designated pitcher Alek Manoah for assignment, effectively ending his time with the team. This decision comes as the Blue Jays aim to solidify their roster for the final stretch of the season.
Santander's activation follows a period of uncertainty regarding his status. Earlier in the day, he expressed doubts about his immediate future with the team. However, Blue Jays manager John Schneider indicated that Santander is physically ready to compete. "I think physically he feels all right, it’s just obviously we want him to be the best version of him," Schneider said.
The team is focused on securing an American League East title, with their magic number to clinch the division currently at four. Given the importance of the upcoming games, the Blue Jays are cautious about Santander's readiness after such a long absence from competitive play. Schneider noted that the coaching staff plans to consult with Santander to determine the best course of action moving forward.
"He’s here and we’re still working out the next step for him," Schneider said. "We ran out of games in Buffalo but unfortunately we have to take it one day at a time. So we’re still figuring out exactly how and when."
The Blue Jays also placed first baseman Ty France on the injured list due to left oblique inflammation, which likely prompted Santander's activation. Meanwhile, shortstop Bo Bichette is making progress in his recovery from a knee sprain. Schneider reported that Bichette had a successful day hitting in the cage and is working towards returning to the lineup.
"We’ll continue to take it one day at a time," Schneider said regarding Bichette's recovery. "The recovery part has been as we expected but it’s going to take time for him to feel more and more comfortable."
As the Blue Jays navigate these roster changes, they remain focused on their goal of making a deep playoff run.
