A planned meeting of congressional leaders with President Donald Trump to discuss extending enhanced premium subsidies for people with Affordable Care Act health insurance collapsed Tuesday, a setback that increases the chance rising costs will lead to 245,000 Pennsylvanians dropping their health insurance Jan. 1, state officials said.

At a briefing Tuesday, state officials said time is running out for Congress to extend the enhanced premium tax credits.

A government shutdown looms Sept. 30, if Congress can’t agree on a funding deal. Democrats have been working to leverage the rapidly approaching deadline to try to restore health care measures trimmed as part of the president’s budget bill passed earlier this year, while Trump and Republican leaders have pushed back on the efforts.
