London: NATO leaders are vowing to toughen defences against Russian jet fighters that breach allied airspace, as US President Donald Trump says they should shoot down the foreign aircraft.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte sharpened his warnings to Russia about its violation of NATO territory after he emerged from urgent talks about the incursion of three MiG-31 fighters into Estonian airspace on Friday.

European authorities are on alert after a series of incidents over the past four days including a cyberattack on three major airports, drone incursions over Copenhagen and Oslo airports and the airspace violation over Estonia.
