WNET Group, the company that runs local broadcasting channel NJ PBS and the media outlet NJ Spotlight News, will not sign a new contract with the state, marking a potential end of an era for the local news network.
The company said its executive board could not reach an agreement with the New Jersey State Broadcasting Authority on a new deal, citing the challenges that come from cuts in federal and state aid.
NJ PBS/NJ Spotlight News suffered extreme budget cuts from the state and federal government. President Donald Trump and the Republican-majority Congress slashed funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which finances local broadcasting stations throughout the country including stations in New Jersey. About $1.5 million of NJ PBS’s budget came from Corporation for Public
