TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Tucson City Council members, along with the city attorney and police chief on Tuesday discussed a proposed ordinance to address public drug use. The ordinance would categorize public drug use as a misdemeanor within city limits.

No motion was filed during the meeting, but the council plans to assemble a team of experts. This team will provide advice to the council in 60 days on how to proceed with the ordinance.

Following concerns about public drug use in Tucson, Council Member Nikki Lee introduced the idea of making open drug use a misdemeanor during the city council's study session. The goal is to provide treatment for offenders instead of jail time. Lee mentioned that this would enable Tucson's city prosecutor and city court to handle these cases.
