The parents of an Ontario woman killed more than five years ago say bail reform would make a big difference to community safety in Canada.
Paul Henderson and Flo Bellman's daughter, Darian Hailey Henderson-Bellman, 25, was fatally shot in Brampton on July 28, 2020. Henderson said the suspected killer, her boyfriend, had been arrested previously for alleged acts of gender-based violence and possessing illegal firearms, but was out on bail when he allegedly shot Darian.
The couple says the courts should make community safety a priority and consider the rights of victims and survivors when deciding bail. Both called on the federal government to take action, which has promised legislation to tighten bail and sentencing rules.
