JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that active-duty Officer William “Bill” Cater died Sunday after being diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023.

According to JSO, Cater joined the agency in 2003 and in 2017 was assigned to the Motor Unit, where he worked in traffic enforcement. In 2023, he was named Motorman of the Year by the agency.

JSO stated that Cater was involved in his church’s high school ministry, volunteered at church camp, and participated as both a soloist and choir member. The agency also said he enjoyed outdoor activities including surfing, skating and riding motorcycles.

JSO said it is supporting Cater’s family and is working with them on plans for a memorial service.
