CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is just an approval vote away from bringing a new cancer care and research center to the peninsula.

City council approved the first reading at Tuesday's meeting. MUSC president Dr. David Cole says cancer rates in South Carolina could increase by 30-40% in the next 15-20 years. Which is why he and others say this is a crucial opportunity to bring top-of-the-line cancer operations to the state.

"This is a real positive for, not just the city, but the region," Charleston Mayor William Cogswell said.
