Singtel Group CEO Yuen Kuan Moon has publicly apologized for an Optus outage that has been associated with the deaths of three Australians. Singtel, a telecommunications company based in Singapore, fully owns Optus, which is Australia's second-largest telecom provider.

"We are deeply sorry to learn about the network incident at our Optus subsidiary that has impacted triple-0 calls, and to hear that customers could not connect to emergency services when they most needed them," Yuen Kuan Moon stated. He expressed condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives due to the incident.

Yuen Kuan Moon assured that Optus is committed to investigating the matter thoroughly. "Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who have passed away, and we know that Optus will get to the bottom of this matter," he said.

The Singtel Group has invested over $9.3 billion in Optus over the past five years, primarily to enhance network infrastructure across Australia. The company plans to continue investing to ensure that Optus can provide reliable communication services to all Australians.

This statement marks the first response from Optus's parent company since the outage was reported last Friday evening. In response to the incident, the Optus board has appointed Dr. Kerry Schott AO to lead an independent review. Dr. Schott is an experienced executive and board director with extensive knowledge of both public and private sector organizations.

The review will focus on the technical failure that occurred on September 18, 2025, which affected customers trying to call triple-0, Australia's emergency number. It aims to identify the causes of the outage and evaluate the processes, protocols, and operations involved. Additionally, the review will assess the operational management of triple-0 calls within the Optus network, including monitoring and effectiveness related to the incident.

The review will also consider the actions taken by Optus in response to the outage, including compliance with policies, procedures, and legislative requirements.
