BEAUMONT, Texas — Tenants at the Beaumont Downtown Lofts say their apartments have become unlivable, citing broken air conditioning units, mold and a non-working elevator that has forced some residents to climb stairs for weeks.

City inspectors tagged the property Tuesday for maintenance code violations, listing the elevator and mechanical equipment as issues.

“They have 30 days to get signed up on a work program, and once they do that they have 150 days to correct those issues,” Deputy Building Official Beau Hansen said.

Residents say they turned to the city after months of frustration. Larry Ricord, 63, said his air conditioner has been out for a month.

“I eat, I sweat, I take a bath, I sweat. The only little air I get is when I come and get comfortable in the bed,” Ricord said.
