OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Omaha City Council is taking steps to ensure Nebraska’s medical marijuana industry won’t land in the middle of neighborhoods if the state approves licenses.
The proposed ordinance does not regulate the use of marijuana. Instead, it sets parameters for where medical marijuana can be grown and sold in Omaha, aligning with state cannabis laws to make sure any future operations follow both city and state requirements.
Councilman Pete Festersen said the move is about responsibility.
“Whether you supported the ballot measure or not, this is something we need to do to be responsible at the city level. All it does is essentially say these classifications can not be done in a residential area,” Festersen said. A commercial area is where that’s appropriate.”
