GREENVILLE, S.C. —
The end of summer normally marks the peak of bird migration season.
Ornithologist and Furman Professor of Biology/Director of Environmental Studies John Quinn said many of these birds are migrating south from places like Canada, Maine, and Minnesota as they head back home to the tropics or areas with warmer climates.
"It’s really an adaptation to take advantage of the optimal conditions at different times of the year,” Quinn said.
According to national trackers , hundreds of millions of birds can pass through the Upstate on any given night, with more than a dozen species expected to make up the largest groups of travelers.
Quinn said the Upstate is a medium to high travel zone, and something to be mindful of is that migrating birds prefer to travel at night. He sa
