Sambalpur: The authorities at Hirakud Dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur opened four more sluice gates to discharge excess water from the reservoir on Wednesday.

With this, the total number of gates opened for releasing excess water from the reservoir has gone up to 12. ADVERTISEMENT

Sources said more gates were opened after heavy rain in the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi River led to a sharp rise in water inflow into the reservoir. Eight gates on the left bank and four on the right are releasing water from the reservoir at present.

Officials said the dam is receiving 2,05,426 cusecs of water, while 1,67,307 cusecs are being released. The water level in the reservoir had climbed to 629.97 feet against the full capacity of 630 feet.
