CALEXICO — When Calexico City Manager Benjamin Martinez was being interviewed about a month ago, he spoke about zero-based budgeting.
At Wednesday’s city council meeting, Mayor Diana Nuricumbo brought up this new type of budgeting, especially for governments. This item was for informational purposes only.
Zero-based budgeting looks at previous budgets and line items.
“These are things we can implement,” she said. “It justifies expenses and allows the manager to be creative to allow smaller departments to grow.”
The mayor said she believes that if a large sum of money is given to bigger departments, it could lead to them buying things they don’t need rather than having a surplus at the end of the year.
