An odour-plagued Stoney Creek landfill is seeking city and provincial permissions needed to build an enclosed treatment facility for stinky garbage juice.

The landfill operated by GFL, originally known as the Taro dump, has spurred 100s of resident complaints this year — and close to 3,000 since 2023 — due to odour issues compared to rotten eggs, “cat pee” and dead fish.

The company is facing provincial offences charges linked to these odour woes.

GFL, which has not responded to multiple Spectator interview requests this year, recently told nearby residents in a community meeting, it is moving ahead with a plan to build an enclosed plant to treat leachate, the garbage juice from the landfill currently collected in an aerated pond.
