FORT WORTH, Texas — A recently closed elementary school caught fire overnight, officials said.

Fort Worth firefighters responded around midnight Wednesday to reports of a structure fire at S. S. Dillow Elementary School in East Fort Worth, Craig Trojacek, a spokesperson for the Fort Worth Fire Department, said.

When crews arrived on the scene, they saw heavy smoke coming from the two-story school, officials said. Fort Worth ISD announced in April 2025 that it would close the school due to structural issues, WFAA previously reported .

The fire escalated, prompting a second alarm with about 18 trucks and 80 firefighters responding to the scene, Trokacek said. The fire was not under control around 5 a.m., he added.
