EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Cow farmers could have a new way to help their cows produce more milk.
Michigan State University (MSU) professors are researching a specific soybean that makes cows produce more milk.
The soybean has a high amount of oleic acid in it, something that is commonly found in olive oil.
That oleic acid aids in digestion, making the cows produce more milk.
When dairy farmers feed the soybeans to their cows, they don’t have to feed them any more than they normally would, but they still end up yielding more milk and milk products in the end.
Dairy farmers can grow the soybeans on their own farms, reducing the need to purchase additional feed.
According to Dr. Adam Lock, one of the lead researchers on the project, this could have a big economic impact.
