(CNN) - The IRS says it will begin phasing out paper tax refund checks for individual taxpayers at the end of the month.
The change, which starts Sept. 30, is a result of an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that mandates all federal payments must transition to electronic methods.
Officials say this is designed to protect taxpayers as well as expedite the refund process.
The IRS says it will publish detailed guidelines for 2025 tax returns before the 2026 filing season begins, but until then, taxpayers should continue to file their returns as they normally would.
During the 2025 tax filing season, the IRS says 93% of refunds to individual income tax filers were issued through direct deposit.
