Rebel Wilson is currently making her next feature amid the ongoing legal dispute surrounding her directorial debut The Deb. Production is currently underway in the U.K. on Girl Group, which the Pitch Perfect star is directing and producing from her own script. The comedy follows Wilson's pop diva after she is kicked out of her own group's reunion tour. She tries to stage a comeback by coaching a bunch of misfit teens to become the next big girl band. Wilson will be joined on screen by real-life girl group stars as members of her character's band Girlfriends. These include Ashley Roberts from the Pussycat Dolls, Spice Girls star Melanie C, and Shaznay Lewis from All Saints. The ensemble cast also features Randall Park, Sheridan Smith, Derry Girls actress Jamie Lee O'Donnell and comedian Guz Khan. The Australian actress described the comedy as the "ultimate girl power movie", telling Deadline, "Ever since being a part of the Pitch Perfect franchise, I've always wanted to create something similar. Girl Group is just so fun and full of spirit that's ready to have you singing and dancing out of the cinema." Wilson made her directorial debut with the musical comedy The Deb, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. However, it remains unreleased due to a messy legal battle between the Bridesmaids star and the film's producers. In July 2024, Wilson accused three producers of trying to block the release and of inappropriate behaviour with the film's lead actress, Charlotte MacInnes. The producers sued Wilson for defamation, and she responded by filing a countersuit. More recently, one of the production companies behind The Deb accused Wilson of sabotaging its release. In response, the 45-year-old insisted on Instagram that she wants "nothing more than to have this film released, and have been working tirelessly" to make it happen.
