The Song Is Over is a perfect title for the farewell tour by sixties classic rock legends The Who. Vancouver’s Rogers Arena hosted one of the few Canadian dates on The Song Is Over — North American Farewell Tour last night, showcasing a 22-song set that covered every key period in the band’s 60-year history.

The fifth tune on 1971’s epic album Who’s Next, The Song Is Over was the second-to-last song of the show.

Performed by who’s left of the U.K. quartet — lead singer Roger Daltrey and lead guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend — and an extended backing band, the tune’s final lyric landed with real emotional impact. As Daltrey sang, “The song is over / I’m left with only tears / I must remember / Even if it takes a million years,” there was a genuine sense that he meant every word.
