Hamilton signed its first sister city agreement with an African community on Tuesday.

A historic partnership with Paynesville, Liberia, was formalized in a virtual ceremony hosted by the charitable group Empowerment Squared.

The agreement, conducted via a livestreamed ceremony, was signed by Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath and Paynesville Mayor Robert Soluntul Bestman, following Hamilton city council’s 2024 motion to establish the relationship.

“It was quite lovely,” Horwath told The Spectator. “Notwithstanding the vast ocean between us and the physical difference and the time difference, it was quite amazing how the spirit transversed through the internet.”
