Pope Leo XIV announced Wednesday morning that he has chosen the next Archbishop of New Orleans.
The Most Rev. James F. Checchio was named the next Archbishop of New Orleans, succeeding current Archbishop Gregory Aymond. Advertisement
He will assist Archbishop Aymond in the role of archbishop and has "the right of succession" when Archbishop Aymond retires.
According to his biography, Checchio was named the Bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen by Pope Francis on March 8, 2016. He was ordained and installed as the Fifth Bishop of Metuchen on May 3, 2016.
Checchio was born in Camden, New Jersey, on April 21, 1966.
According to his biography, Checchio received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He studied at North American C
