NEW ORLEANS — Pope Leo XIV named Bishop James Checchio of Metuchen, New Jersey, as the new Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans — meaning he will eventually succeed Archbishop Gregory Aymond.
So, who is the man set to take on one of the city’s most prominent religious leadership roles?
Checchio, a native of Camden, New Jersey, has served as Bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen since 2016. Before that, he spent a decade in Rome as rector and vice rector of the Pontifical North American College.
