A new Archbishop of New Orleans was appointed Wednesday.

Pope Leo has appointed Most Reverend James Checchio, JCD, MBA of the Diocese of Metuchen, Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans. Advertisement

Archbishop Checchio will assist Archbishop Gregory Aymond in the role of archbishop and has "the right of succession" when Archbishop Aymond retires.

Aymond, who has already reached retirement age for his position, is staying in his capacity until the yearslong archdiocese bankruptcy case is resolved.

Aymond was born and raised in Gentilly, has been a significant figure in the Catholic community of New Orleans since he took over as the Catholic leader for metro New Orleans in 2009.
