A significant fire has erupted at the Groundwell Trading Estate in Swindon, following reports of a "huge explosion" that shook nearby homes. The incident occurred earlier this evening, prompting emergency crews to implement an evacuation and establish a large cordon around the area.

Witnesses described hearing a loud bang before flames engulfed the site, with one resident stating their house trembled from the force of the explosion. Images from the scene depict bright orange flames and thick smoke billowing into the sky, visible from miles away.

Emergency services are currently on-site, advising local residents to remain indoors and keep their windows closed for safety. A spokesperson for Swindon Police confirmed, "We are currently dealing with a serious incident at Groundwell Industrial Estate, Crompton Road. An explosion has occurred in one of the industrial units, and we are working alongside colleagues from the ambulance and fire service to make the area safe."

The police have closed Cricklade Road between Queensfield and Thamesdown Drive, while the A419 remains open for now. They have reassured the public that there is no need for residents to evacuate their homes, although they should avoid the industrial estate area.

Councillor Jim Robbins stated that a council response team is collaborating with emergency services to assess the situation. He remarked, "Work is going on to understand what happened, determine if anyone was hurt, and make the area safe. Please give the Emergency Services space to carry out their work."

As of now, it remains unclear if there have been any injuries resulting from the fire. Emergency services continue to manage the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
