The Town of Strasburg has declared a Drought Watch condition and is urging residents and businesses to begin voluntary water conservation measures as river flows dip below state-mandated thresholds.

The declaration, announced Tuesday, comes under requirements of the Virginia Water Protection withdrawal permit and the Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Water Supply Plan. The plan directs the town to declare a drought watch when the seven-day average flow of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River falls below 175 cubic feet per second. As of Sept. 22, even with recent rainfall, the average flow had dropped under 145 cfs.

“All citizens, including private well users, are encouraged to begin voluntary water conservation actions,” the town said in a press release.
