U.S. Steel plans to invest $200 million in the hot strip mill at Gary Works.

The company's board of directors approved $300 million in projects at U.S. Steel's flagship Gary Works steel mill and the Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock, Penn., just outside Pittsburgh. It's part of Nippon Steel's $11 billion in investment that it pledged to secure permission to buy the iconic steelmaker, one of the Calumet Region's largest employers. The steelmaker has said it will invest more than $3 billion in Gary Works in coming years.

Nippon Steel said it is working with U.S. Steel's integrated mills, including the flat-rolled division, to improve operational efficiencies.
