WHEATON, Md. — Montgomery County is the latest jurisdiction deciding to cancel their Hispanic Heritage celebration due to concerns that their events might attract federal immigration enforcement .
The event was scheduled to be held on Oct. 6 at the Marian Fryer Town Plaza. This would have been the second year the event was held in downtown Wheaton.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said he had the final say, but it was the event's organizers, including some county agencies who proposed pulling the plug.
"In conversations with people who participate, they did not want us to hold the festival," Elrich said Wednesday. "So, we are putting the money into activities that are going to occur in schools and other places around the county that are more discreet."
