Squid, a black Labrador facility dog, works at the hospital to keep young patients calm. For 10-year-old Niah Carver, his impact has been life-changing.
Niah, who was born with hypoplastic right heart syndrome, met Squid while undergoing treatment at Monroe Carell.
Inspired by the comfort Squid gave her, she brought her own stuffed version of the dog to school to help her through stressful moments. The most recent of which was field day.
“Because field day is a big day and it’s really overwhelming, so he helps me not feel overwhelmed,” Niah said.
